Expert Meeting on Criminal Justice Approaches to the Linkages between Terrorism and Sexual and Gender-based Violence, (Sexual) Slavery, Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling

4-5 November 2020

Co-Chairs of the Criminal Justice and Rule of Law (CJ-ROL) Working Group, Nigeria and Switzerland, are organizing two expert meetings in order to explore the different ways in which the linkages between terrorism and these other crimes manifest. The first expert meeting took place on 4-5 November 2020 in a virtual format. The virtual workshop on 4 November specifically focused on the criminal justice challenges related to terrorism and sexual and gender-based violence, human trafficking and migrant smuggling. The virtual workshop on 5 November addressed the criminal justice challenges related to trafficking, recruitment and exploitation of children by terrorist organizations.

Australia and Indonesia, Co-Chairs of the GCTF Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) Working Group, within the framework of the 'Gender and Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE) Policy Toolkit Initiative', hosted this virtual workshop in order to develop a Policy Toolkit, a practical, action-oriented guidance for practitioners and policymakers on designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating programs that strengthen CVE efforts by taking into account the gendered aspects of engagement in violent extremism and of approaches to prevent and counter violent extremism.

Virtual Launch Event - Initiative on Ensuring Implementation of Countering the Financing of Terrorism Measures While Safeguarding Civic Space

The Netherlands, Morocco and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) launched an Initiative on ‘Ensuring the Effective Implementation of Countering the Financing of Terrorism Measures While Safeguarding Civic Space’. The initiative will provide an inclusive platform for a diverse range of experts to share their perspectives, with an objective of strengthening dialogue and coordination among counterterrorism and CFT practitioners, the United Nations, government representatives, financial intelligence units, CSOs, humanitarian actors, and private sector, and supervisory authorities with CFT responsibilities on this topic.
