The nexus between peace, security and climate change has been a growing matter of international concern. Climate change has led to loss of livelihoods, resource competition and conflict as well as the displacement of people which creates vulnerabilities exploited by violent extremist groups.

On 4 June, the GCTF Initiative on Addressing the Nexus Between Climate Change and Violent Extremism Leads, Germany and Kenya, held its first interactive virtual workshop to further delve into the phenomenon with key experts and practitioners. The focus of the first virtual workshop of the Initiative was two-fold: to introduce the Initiative and to start the discussion on what evidence is currently available on the nexus between climate fragility and vulnerability and violent extremism conducive to terrorism.

The GCTF Initiative on Addressing the Nexus Between Climate Change and Violent Extremism was launched by Germany and Kenya during the Coordinating Committee Meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, in February 2024, with the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF) serving as the Implementing Partner. The Initiative aims to gain a deeper understanding by convening a wide range of experts and practitioners through a series of workshops. The knowledge shared will help develop a GCTF Framework Document  in September 2025.
